About this class

This is a private class for 2-4 people.

Logistics

  • Price: 90 per person

  • Duration: 2-3 hours

  • Location: Abby Seltzer Ceramics at 2223 Darwin Rd, Madison, WI 53704

  • Date: contact us to book at a date and time of your choosing

Preparation

  • No Prior Experience Needed: just bring yourself and enthusiasm to make some pottery! We will walk you through everything you need to know to make your pottery dreams come true.

  • Wear Comfortable Clothing and Remove Jewelry: pottery making can get messy, so we recommend you wear clothing you don’t mind getting dirty, and remove any rings or bracelets before the class. And don’t worry if you do get a bit messy- clay comes right out in the wash!

Class Overview

Our instructors will walk you through the entire process and give you as much hands on assistance as you wish. Starting with…

  1. Demonstration: our instructor will give a demonstration of how to throw a pot on the wheel. From preparing the clay, to centering, to pulling walls, to forming different shapes, to adding decoration.

  2. Preparing the Clay: students will be given pre prepared balls of clay ready to throw on the wheel. If you’re interested, instructors will happily show you how to prepare your own clay for the wheel.

  3. Practice Throwing: students will begin by making a few practice pieces to get into the groove of throwing pottery. Instructors will walk you through every step, and provide hands on guidance to figure out what techniques work best for you.

  4. Make Pieces to Take Home: once you’ve gotten a bit of practice on the wheel, we will help you make a few pieces of your choice to take home!

  5. Choose a Color: after putting on the finishing touches on your pieces, you’ll choose a glaze color out of our custom glazes for your piece to be finished in. After the class, our studio will transform your pots into durable, functional ceramic pottery and notify you when your pottery is ready for pickup.

Collecting Your Finished Pottery

  • We will notify you when you’re piece is ready to be picked up.

  • Pots are typically ready for pick up 3-6 weeks after the class.

  • Come back to the studio to pick up your piece for free, or opt to pay a shipping fee to have your work shipped to you.

Testimonials

“Abby's class was not only fun but I actually learned something. She has a really special way of conveying how to do the various steps when making pottery on a wheel and also why. She was an accommodating, patient and fun instructor. Great class, thank you so much Abby!”

“Absolutely loved Abby’s pottery throwing class. We reached for a private session and Abby set up an opportunity for us to have fun and learn so much about the process. She was patient, encouraging, and clearly passionate about her craft. We walked away not only having made cool pieces we’re pretty proud of, but also with a much deeper appreciation of the intricacies of throwing pottery. Highly recommend a class with Abby to anyone looking to get their hands dirty and have a great time doing it!”
